This project shows you how to lay loft bording over insulation while keeping the required amount of loft insulation both at the old depth of 100mm and the new increased regulation depth of 270mm.
There may also be obstructions such as vertical beams at awkward angles.
If not hire a professional.
When you use solid insulation board to create a warm loft the key thing to remember is ventilation you must keep a 50mm gap between the roof and the rigid insulation board.
Loft boards are fixed together relatively easily but working withing the confines of the loft s available space can make boarding a loft a tricky endeavour.
Both of which are 18mm thick.
This is particularly key because when loft boards are installed insulation is often installed at the same time.
Loft boarding started to become more difficult in the 1990s when the recommended insulation thickness exceeded that of the 100mm joists and became 200mm.
Boarding a loft during that time would have been simpler as you could lay the boards straight over the joists ideally allowing a 10mm air gap to stop moisture build up.
Try to place your loft boarding area close to the loft hatch.
Remember that most people only bother to board the central area of their loft as the angle of the roof usually makes the edges less useful for storage and more difficult to access.
The edges where the roof meets the wall in the loft to actually store their items leaving the central area clear to enable you to move throughout the loft easily.
Loft insulation boards are used where a loft conversion is to take place but boarding a loft for storage simply requires insulation under the loft floor.
For more on walk boards visit our how to work safely in the loft article lay the first loft roll at the eaves leaving a 25mm gap away from the eaves for ventilation to help prevent condensation.
Boarding the loft is a way to reduce heat loss as it creates another barrier to any heat escaping from the roof.
Standard loft boards come in two different sizes.
2 400mm x 600mm and 1 220mm x 320mm.
